Salkantay Trek 4 Days to Machu Picchu
The Salkantay Trek 4 Days is one of the most incredible alternatives to the Inca Trail, offering breathtaking landscapes and a unique cultural immersion. This shorter version of the classic Salkantay route takes you through high mountain passes, turquoise lagoons, lush cloud forests, and finally to the world-famous Machu Picchu.
Designed for adventurers who want to experience the best of the Peruvian Andes in less time, this trek combines natural beauty, cultural richness, and physical challenge. Along the way, you will witness the majestic Salkantay Mountain, discover the sacred Humantay Lagoon, and walk through coffee plantations before reaching the Lost City of the Incas.

The Salkantay Trek is listed among the world’s best hikes by National Geographic. It is an excellent choice for those who wish to explore off-the-beaten path trails while still arriving at Machu Picchu. In only four days, this itinerary allows you to cross dramatic landscapes and immerse yourself in the traditions of local Andean communities.
Unlike the Inca Trail, permits for the Salkantay route are always available, making it accessible year-round. This trek is perfect for hikers who enjoy both adventure and comfort, as you’ll experience wild nature during the day and cozy accommodations at night, finishing with a hotel stay in Aguas Calientes before visiting Machu Picchu.

🚆 Return Options to Cusco
Salkantay Trek by Train
Choosing the train option is the most comfortable and recommended way to return after visiting Machu Picchu. The train departs around 2:55 pm, giving you extra time to fully explore the Inca citadel or even hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain without rushing.
The train ride from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo takes approximately 2 hours. Upon arrival, our staff will be waiting for you outside the station to drive you back to Cusco. The trip by car lasts about 2 more hours, with an estimated arrival around 7:00 pm near Plaza Regocijo in Cusco.
Salkantay Trek by Car
The car option is a more economical choice, but it offers less time to enjoy Machu Picchu. If you plan to hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, this option can feel a bit rushed.
To take this route, you must leave Machu Picchu before 10:30 am and walk about 3 hours along the train tracks to reach Hidroeléctrica. There, your car will be waiting between 2:30 pm and 3:00 pm. The drive from Hidroeléctrica to Cusco takes about 6–7 hours, with an estimated arrival between 10:00 pm and 11:00 pm.
